This fascinating book describes the geological makeup and history of the Sahara Desert in North Africa. The biggest hot desert on Earth, it covers parts of twelve countriesmore area than the entire United States! The Sahara has oases scattered widely and sand dunes that can reach as high as 600 feet (182m). Readers will learn about the people, plants, and animals such as camels, goats, and fennec foxes that inhabit this desert habitat. Special sections describe the desert's natural resources, such as oil and natural gas, and the unique problems facing this region. From School Library Journal: Gr 3-7-These books are clearly written, comprehensive, and ideal for reports. Each one opens with a map showing the area covered by the desert and concludes with a map of the world's deserts. The maps and full-color photos enhance the texts and have informative captions. Readers will enjoy learning about the various animals that live in these unusual climates. For example, in the Kalahari Desert, springbok typically graze at night, but if they "do feed during the daytime, they face away from the sun. Doing so allows their white bottoms to reflect the heat." Additional subjects include the history and current status of human inhabitants, plant life, the terrain, natural resources, and ways the desert may be at risk. The concisely written texts will be valuable to report writers.-Stephanie Farnlacher, Trace Crossings Elementary School, Hoover, ALα(c) Copyright 2011. Explains how seeds are formed, including how they spread and their different uses. From Booklist: Each of the four books in the new Plants Close-Up series offers an extremely basic introduction to plant parts and functions. What Are Seeds? goes through the various parts of a seed, ways seeds grow, how they are spread by animals, and their sprouting process. All the books’ pages are laid out similarly, with one large photo or simple diagram and a short paragraph of text on each page. While this layout is exceptionally clear, especially for the diagrams, it does become a bit monotonous. The final page of each title features notes for adults about one or two very simple activities (for example, growing a plant from a root such as a potato) or experiments (such as growing seeds with water, sunlight, or both) related to the book’s topic. Preschool-Grade 1. --Miriam Aronin "About this title" may belong to another edition of this title.
