Introduces the traditions of Brazil, from religious traditions and family occasions to cultural traditions and important days in Brazil's history. From School Library Journal: Gr 3-5-Simple overviews of the holidays, festivals, traditions, and customs of these countries. Each spread contains information and eye-catching, full-color photos depicting the foods and people commemorating events. National and religious holidays are included. Brazil starts with Christmas and ends with Republic Day, November 15. India begins with New Year's, which is celebrated at different times in different parts of the country and follows a chronological order, ending with Christmas. Mexico opens with birthdays, weddings, family days, and Saint's Day. Then it proceeds in chronological order from New Year's Day to Christmas. "Did You Know" blurbs give additional facts. If cultural sources for independent countries are a focus, these books offer broad synopses in clear-cut terms.-Sandra Welzenbach, Villarreal Elementary School, San Antonio, TXα(c) Copyright 2011. Canada is a multicultural country. English and French are its two official languages, but Canadians come from many different cultures. This colorful book describes the different holidays and traditions in various parts of Canada and the ways in which Canadians celebrate family occasions. From School Library Journal: Gr 3–5—Readers will enjoy these attractive updates in an existing series that tackles holidays and customs from around the world (previous books include Brazil, Mexico, China, and Japan, and SLJ described the series as "broad synopses in clear-cut terms"). The books are well designed, with plenty of photos and a large font. Some of the holidays may not be particularly enlightening from a cultural standpoint (for instance, Canada discusses Labor Day, and France has a section on Mother's Day and Father's Day, holidays that likely won't be new to most readers), but there's plenty of other content that students will find useful and enjoyable. Those looking to add a few more countries to their holiday or cultural collections should take note of these informative offerings. "About this title" may belong to another edition of this title.

CULTURAL TRADITIONS IN RUSSIA

Introduces the traditions and customs of Russia, from Defender of the Motherland Day and Radio Day to National Unity Day and Ivan Kupala Day. From School Library Journal: Gr 3-5-Holidays well known and obscure are introduced in this series. Each volume begins with a welcome to its titular nation and includes information about its geographical setting and general population, and offers a generic introduction to the concept of traditions. China and Japan highlight the nations' emphasis on the family and ancestry. The holidays are then presented spread by spread in approximate chronological order, starting with the New Year. Each occasion is accompanied by dates (lunar or Gregorian) and information on its origins and how it is observed. Much attention is paid to which holidays give people the day off from work or school. Captioned photographs-mainly in color-adorn each spread, along with "Did You Know?" boxes featuring fun facts. Vocabulary words in bold are well chosen and defined in a glossary; the index helps young researchers-probably this series' primary users-locate necessary facts. Good updates for the "Festivals of the World" series (Gareth Stevens, 1997) or to augment titles in the Marshall Cavendish 2010 series.-Rebecca Dash Donsky, New York Public Libraryα(c) Copyright 2011. Children will enjoy finding out about different types of soils from different climates, what animals and plants live in these different soils, and just how valuable soil is to human life. From School Library Journal: Grade 3-6–Different Kinds describes how soil is different from dirt; layers, chemistry, and textures and types; and how the material is affected by climate, animals, and people. Micro Life discusses the various beings, from amoeba to larger living things such as slugs and fungi, that depend on soil, clearly explaining such concepts as symbiosis and the food cycle. Soil Erosion offers information on the many ways in which the process can occur, its dangers, and what can be done by children to stop it. The book also discusses positive effects of erosion. How Is Soil Made? is less useful than the other books because much of its content is covered in them, but overall this series enlivens a dry topic and provides solid basics on relevant subjects, complemented by quick and easy experiments and clear, well-captioned color photographs. This informative title will inspire budding activists to go green in the garden! Accessible text and engaging photographs introduce composting and Earth-friendly gardening. Readers learn how to build a compost bin, what items to recycle in the bin, and how to use compost to start their own garden. From Booklist: Aloian defines “green gardening” as “planting and growing a healthy garden that is good for the environment.” In 11 quick chapters, readers will learn such tips as how to remove pests with natural repellents like garlic and cayenne pepper and “how to get help from birds and insects.” Suggestions are punctuated by “Take Action!” boxes, where readers are encouraged to keep a green diary or look for unusual planters, such as old boots or cookie tins. Aloian quickly moves into composting, explaining the process and making the case for its ease of use at home. The transition from dinner table to compost heap is illustrated with full-color photographs, which also display the natural beauty of rooftop and community gardens. A succinct product of the Green Scene series, this inclusive title points its green thumb in the right direction for beginners. This exciting book describes the geological makeup and history of the Mojave Desert in the United States. Located in the states of California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona, there are several national parks in the desert including Death Valleythe hottest place in North America. Readers will learn about the people, plants, and animals such as cougars, scorpions, and rattlesnakes that inhabit this desert habitat. The Mojave Desert is also a windy place where wind farms have been set up to generate electricity. Special sections describe the desert's natural resources, such as borax, silver, and gold, and the unique problems facing this region. From School Library Journal: Gr 3-7-These books are clearly written, comprehensive, and ideal for reports. Each one opens with a map showing the area covered by the desert and concludes with a map of the world's deserts. The maps and full-color photos enhance the texts and have informative captions. Readers will enjoy learning about the various animals that live in these unusual climates. For example, in the Kalahari Desert, springbok typically graze at night, but if they "do feed during the daytime, they face away from the sun. Doing so allows their white bottoms to reflect the heat." Additional subjects include the history and current status of human inhabitants, plant life, the terrain, natural resources, and ways the desert may be at risk. The concisely written texts will be valuable to report writers.-Stephanie Farnlacher, Trace Crossings Elementary School, Hoover, ALα(c) Copyright 2011.
