Explains how seeds are formed, including how they spread and their different uses. From Booklist: Each of the four books in the new Plants Close-Up series offers an extremely basic introduction to plant parts and functions. What Are Seeds? goes through the various parts of a seed, ways seeds grow, how they are spread by animals, and their sprouting process. All the books’ pages are laid out similarly, with one large photo or simple diagram and a short paragraph of text on each page. While this layout is exceptionally clear, especially for the diagrams, it does become a bit monotonous. The final page of each title features notes for adults about one or two very simple activities (for example, growing a plant from a root such as a potato) or experiments (such as growing seeds with water, sunlight, or both) related to the book’s topic. Preschool-Grade 1. --Miriam Aronin "About this title" may belong to another edition of this title.

From Booklist: Each of the four books in the new Plants Close-Up series offers an extremely basic introduction to plant parts and functions. What Are Stems? covers different types and features of stems, such as underground stems, tree trunks, and thorns; stems’ water-storing function; and nodes and buds. All the books’ pages are laid out similarly, with one large photo or simple diagram and a short paragraph of text on each page. With lush illustrations, poems, and accessible scientific information, The Wisdom of Trees by Lita Judge is a fascinating exploration of the hidden communities trees create to strengthen themselves and others. We clean the air and seed the clouds, we drench the thirsty land with rain. We are like wizards. The story of a tree is a story of community, communication, and cooperation. Although trees may seem like silent, independent organisms, they form a network buzzing with life: they talk, share food, raise their young, and offer protection. Trees thrive on diversity, learn from their ancestors, and give back to their communities. Trees not only sustain life on our planet—they can also teach us important lessons about patience, survival, and teamwork.
