If you've ever wanted to wear a crown, invade a neighbor, or marry for land and money, read this entertaining book. Find out how the brainy and brawny royals in history, who inherited power or seized it by force, measure up against each other. From power-hungry kings and queens to kindhearted monarchs, some were brave warriors, some were cruel dictators, and a few even ruled in the best interests of their people. Full-color comic illustrations are splashed throughout the witty, bite-sized chunks of fact-filled text. From School Library Journal: Gr 5-8-Oversimplification, superficial coverage, and caricature-style illustrations limit the informational content and appeal of this set. Each volume covers more than 20 main topics-which receive about five paragraphs of text-as well as additional background chapters and grouped topics with single paragraphs about people or battles, all in less than 60 pages of main text. The diverse group of people, who include women and people from non-Western cultures who lived between ancient times and the space age, are given an overall "Hard as Nails" rating on a "Hardometer" scale of one to 10 that measures characteristics such as cunning, courage, and ruthlessness. There is no apparent organizational structure, which results in abrupt transitions, such as Ponce de Léon following Neil Armstrong, and some odd inclusions (e.g., space explorers are discussed in Travelers). VERDICT These books are unlikely to hold readers' attention and they will be of little value to middle school libraries.α(c) Copyright 2011. Enter a medieval world unlike any you've seen before. Welcome to an innovative and reader-friendly approach to medieval history, one that combines visually appealing infographics, whimsical cartoons and lively, informative text. Every visual double-page spread highlights an aspect of the diversity and intercultural dynamics of the medieval world, from Europe to the Byzantine, Ottoman and Islamic empires. Readers get the inside scoop on crusaders and caliphs, Mongols and midwives, as they read about expanding trade routes, power shifts, conquests, adventures and persecutions. From the daily life of the medieval child to Rabban bar Sauma's extraordinary pilgrimage, the result is a colorful and varied picture of what life was like a thousand years ago. For example, did you know: what life was like for medieval women? you could buy a Turkish horse for 455 cartloads of dung? the best way to stop the unstoppable knight? a Viking longship is the length of two of today's school buses? who was most likely to die from the Black Death? how Rome and Constantinople rose and fell? Shapiro's meticulous research is brought to life by Ross Kinnaird's historically-based, humorous, illustrations. Who would imagine medieval history could be this much fun!

Ever thought of becoming a water hauler? How about a necromancer? Life was tough in Old Testament times. People had to cross deserts on foot, grow food on parched land and deal with earthquakes, drought and disease. Had you lived then, you might not have wanted to be a water hauler. That would have meant walking for miles with a heavy jar full of water on your head. Perfumers had a more pleasant job, concocting sweet-smelling fragrances their customers used to mask the smell of unwashed bodies -- and to keep flies away. Other jobs included necromancer (for those who liked to communicate with the dead), date picker (not for those afraid of heights) and gold jewelry maker (people thought they were magicians!). A fact-filled introduction, detailed timeline and thorough index make this book perfect for research projects, while the humorous illustrations and snappy text provide an entertaining read. Kids will look at history in a whole new way thanks to this unique approach.
