The pyramids are a fascinating part of our historybut have you ever wondered if they were related to aliens from outer space? Is there really a city made of gold like in the story of El Dorado? This fascinating book examines the many myths and legends about our ancient past, searching for and finding facts about fascinating sites that include Stonehenge and the lost city of Tiahuanaco. From School Library Journal: Grade 4–6—While Atlantis covers one topic, Ancients introduces four—Easter Island statues, the ruins of Tiahuanaco in the Andes, Egypt's Great Pyramids, and Eldorado, legendary city of South America. Packed with information, each skinny book is busy with large type; colorful, well-captioned illustrations and photographs; and "How Strange..." side boxes. While not always "strange," they are interesting. The writing is clear enough, but the proper nouns, especially in Ancients, will be hard to pronounce: "Roggeveen," "Khufu," "Drbal," and so on. Pronunciation guides would have been helpful. Bold words are defined along the bottom of every page. This is the weakest part of the texts. While "Poseidon," "solar year," and "gilded" are handily defined, there is no reason to define such terms as "mayor" or "dinosaur" to this audience. These words are then duplicated in glossaries. Despite these few small concerns, these are worthy titles.
