When Bear wakes up after a long, cold winter, he makes a special spring lunch and invites Fox to join him. The food is delicious, and Fox asks Bear to teach him how to cook. They walk through the forest collecting honey, nuts and other wild ingredients, and they greet their friends along the way. With an armload of tasty foods, Bear and Fox return to Bear's den and cook up a feast to share. Afterwards, Bear writes down his recipes so that Fox (and you!) can enjoy many marvelous meals. His cookbook - Best of Bear - offers a selection of kid-friendly, forest-themed recipes, including nut burgers, wild greens pita pizza, hazelnut-chocolate chip cookies and a wild strawberry smoothie. Readers can revisit the animal friends from Bear's Winter Party and try out fifteen fun recipes in this playful story/cookbook from award-winning author Deborah Hodge, featuring exuberant art by Lisa Cinar.

When Emma sets out to make a cookie family with her Grandma, the happy afternoon suddenly turns sad. The cookies are meant to look like her family, but hers is the only one with licorice hair and eyes. She doesn’t look like the others; does that mean she doesn’t belong? In gentle text, Deborah Hodge tells the story of one small girl’s adoption: the hopes and prayers of her Canadian parents, their trip to the other side of the world, their meeting with the new baby, and the very long ride home to the new family waiting for Emma Thousands of baby girls from China have been adopted by North American families. Although this lovely book tells the story of one such little girl, it is about much more than the logistics of adoption. It is about the many ways in which we can come together to form a family.

Along the Pacific west coast, stretching from Alaska down to Northern California, is an ancient and beautiful rainforest where everything is connected. Full of towering ancient trees and new seedlings, the forest provides shelter and food for many animals. The trees are home to Douglas squirrels, which help to spread the conifer cones that will sprout into new trees, Western screech-owls and chestnut-backed chickadees. The giant conifers shelter the streams where baby salmon hatch in the spring, and where adult salmon return to spawn. Bears, wolves and eagles feast on the fish, and the leftovers of their meals fertilize the plants and trees in a cycle where the trees protect the salmon and the salmon feed the trees. Banana slugs that slide along the forest floor, helping to further break down decaying plants and animals. And new life is lifted up by nursery logs, where seedlings sprout and grow strong on the decaying fallen trees. Deborah Hodge's text shows the interconnectedness of this amazing ecosystem, while Karen Reczuch's lavish watercolors show the rainforest teeming with life and the shades of green that can only come from more than ten feet of rain a year.
