In an intergenerational winter's story full of quiet wonder, a little boy takes his grandfather for a walk down a forest trail. The boy shows Grandpa how to jump in the snow and how to make it splash into the creek. Grandpa shows the boy rabbit tracks and deer hiding among the trees. They greet their animal neighbours by name: Raven, Rabbit, Deer, Sparrow. Back home, the little boy sets the table with cookies while Grandpa pours the milk. It has been a glorious afternoon, and soon there will be books and blankets and the big armchair by the fire.

Award-winning science poetry master Leslie Bulion presents a lyrical salute to Africa's Serengeti Plain, one of the most spectacular and productive ecosystems on Earth. Leslie Bulion, a virtuoso science poet, has created a portrait of the rainy season on East Africa's southern Serengeti Plain, offering young readers a compelling look at an ecosystem in motion. Using a series of interconnected verses inspired by an East African Swahili poem form--the utendi--Bulion's cadences and rhythmic lines mimic the web of life in the Serengeti, following the great migration of wildebeest, zebras, and others into and then out of the vast short-grass plain. Lush, evocative gouache illustrations by Becca Stadtlander showcase the grandeur of this immense and complex ecosystem and provide close-up details of its wildlife inhabitants. Scientific notes on each spread and comprehensive back matter material offer more specifics. This, paired with Bulion's brilliant poetic form, make the book ideal for cross-curricular learning. From award-winning author Deborah Wiles and illustrator Bao Luu comes an exuberant and heartwarming picture book tribute to the things that connect us all—nature, love, and gratitude. I hear the song that nature sings that links each heart to mine. The ocean blue, the sky above the forest with its pine. For a young brother and sister, every day spent in nature is an adventure, and every natural marvel they encounter is a gift. Together, they run through fields of tall grass and say thank you for the rain; they greet fish in babbling brooks and say thank you for the clear blue waters. At the end of each adventure, they say thank you for the new friends they collected along the way. When given a chance to do more than say thank you. the siblings gather their tools—their friends, their shovels, and their watering cans—and plant the seeds of gratitude.

Twelve lyrical poems look at twelve different trees, from early spring to deep winter. In each poem, a child identifies with a feature of the tree -- such as the smooth trunk of a birch whose bark has peeled away, the strong branches of a spruce that shelter small birds or the pink flowers of a cherry blossom that tumble like confetti. The poems provide an opportunity to learn about each tree, inspiring us to look afresh at the trees around us -- whether in the schoolyard, neighborhood or park -- and get to know them better.

A daylily blooms for just one day, opening when the sun comes up and closing when it sets. In Chris Raschka's extraordinary garden, seven daylilies bloom for others during the course of a sun-drenched week--for example, Monday's lily blooms for the baby, and Saturday's lily blooms for friends. The lovely and lyrical text underscores the value of living in the moment, caring for those around you, and being mindful of nature.
