Lori Block and her best friend Sophia are dedicated to their Fourth-Grade basketball team, despite being relegated to “the 5th quarter,” an extra period before the “real” game starts, where the not-so-good kids play, and the points don’t count. That doesn’t matter to Lori though, because Basketball is a place where working hard and getting better gives her hints of self-confidence. At school, she is awkward and unsure, and at home Lori’s parents are consumed by her mother’s bid for local government. With athletic promise and a dogged determination to keep improving, Lori pursues her passion while navigating awkward social dynamics, her own expectations and her first overnight away from home. Can she find her confidence in school, at home, and on the court?

Playing and watching sports has been a big part of Evanka Osmak's life since she was a kid. Growing up in Oakville, Ontario with an older sister and brother there was always a game to be played or a competition to join. She credits her early years playing sports for giving her great friends, exciting adventures and life long skills. She may not have always been the star on the team, but being part of a team was just as rewarding. Evanka turned her passion of sports into a dream job working for Canada's national sports network, Sportsnet. Today she has two young boys and a wonderful husband. Megan's art career began in her early school days in Singapore, where she was often caught doodling in her textbook during class. She went on to design costumes, paint backdrops, and sketch endlessly. Currently, she is a student at Pratt Institute of Design in New York City, where she continues to draw for her own enjoyment - and now for the enjoyment of others.

This girls’ basketball story deals with the conflict between family caregiving responsibilities and extra-curricular sports that some kids, particularly girls, often face. Jo loves playing basketball in gym class, and she is surprised when she makes the school team. Because she has to babysit her younger brother, she’s afraid her mom will make her give up her place on the team, so instead, Jo hatches a plan to have a neighbour secretly babysit so she can play. But the deception and secrets start getting to her after a few close calls. While Jo shows initiative and problem-solving skills both on and off the court, will her mom see it that way when she’s found out?

Quiet, sensitive Faith starts middle school already worrying about how she will fit in. To her surprise, Amanda, a popular eighth grader, convinces her to join the school soccer team, the Bloodhounds. Having never played soccer in her life, Faith ends up on the C team, a ragtag group that's way better at drama than at teamwork. Although they are awful at soccer, Faith and her teammates soon form a bond both on and off the soccer field that challenges their notions of loyalty, identity, friendship, and unity. The Breakaways from Cathy G. Johnson is a raw, and beautifully honest graphic novel that looks into the lives of a diverse and defiantly independent group of kids learning to make room for themselves in the world.

The uplifting true story of Minda Dentler, the first female wheelchair athlete to complete the Ironman World Championship triathlon. Minda Dentler made history when she became the first female wheelchair athlete to complete the world's toughest triathlon, using only her arms to finish a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride, and 26.2 mile marathon. But the journey there wasn't easy. Minda was paralyzed as an infant in India after contracting polio, and was left in the care of an orphanage. After she was adopted by an American family and moved to Washington, she underwent surgeries to enable her to walk with leg braces and crutches. As she grew, she faced many challenges, but remained undeterred by her disability. Her decision to begin training and competing in triathlons was no different. Despite the obstacles and failures she experienced along the way, Minda's persistence and determination in the face of setbacks helped her to make sports history and inspire people around the world to rethink what's possible!
