Lori Block and her best friend Sophia are dedicated to their Fourth-Grade basketball team, despite being relegated to “the 5th quarter,” an extra period before the “real” game starts, where the not-so-good kids play, and the points don’t count. That doesn’t matter to Lori though, because Basketball is a place where working hard and getting better gives her hints of self-confidence. At school, she is awkward and unsure, and at home Lori’s parents are consumed by her mother’s bid for local government. With athletic promise and a dogged determination to keep improving, Lori pursues her passion while navigating awkward social dynamics, her own expectations and her first overnight away from home. Can she find her confidence in school, at home, and on the court?

A powerful novel about friendship, basketball, and one teen's mission to create a better life for his family in the tradition of Jason Reynolds and Walter Dean Myers, from National Book Award Finalist Randy Ribay. "Belongs on the shelf alongside contemporary heavy-hitters like Angie Thomas's The Hate U Give, Brendan Kiely and Jason Reynolds's All-American Boys, and Nic Stone's Dear Martin." --School Library Journal, starred review Bunny and Nasir have been best friends forever, but when Bunny accepts an athletic scholarship across town, Nasir feels betrayed. While Bunny tries to fit in with his new, privileged peers, Nasir spends more time with his cousin, Wallace, who is being evicted. When Wallace makes a bet against Bunny, Nasir is faced with an impossible decision--maybe a dangerous one. Told from alternating perspectives, After the Shot Drops is a heart-pounding story about the responsibilities of great talent and the importance of compassion.

Playing and watching sports has been a big part of Evanka Osmak's life since she was a kid. Growing up in Oakville, Ontario with an older sister and brother there was always a game to be played or a competition to join. She credits her early years playing sports for giving her great friends, exciting adventures and life long skills. She may not have always been the star on the team, but being part of a team was just as rewarding. Evanka turned her passion of sports into a dream job working for Canada's national sports network, Sportsnet. Today she has two young boys and a wonderful husband. Megan's art career began in her early school days in Singapore, where she was often caught doodling in her textbook during class. She went on to design costumes, paint backdrops, and sketch endlessly. Currently, she is a student at Pratt Institute of Design in New York City, where she continues to draw for her own enjoyment - and now for the enjoyment of others.

ANEW YORK TIMESBESTSELLER! The first memoir for young readers by sports legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. At one time, Lew Alcindor was just another kid from New York City with all the usual problems: He struggled with fitting in, with pleasing a strict father, and with overcoming shyness that made him feel socially awkward. But with a talent for basketball, and an unmatched team of supporters, Lew Alcindor was able to transform and to become Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. From a childhood made difficult by racism and prejudice to a record-smashing career on the basketball court as an adult, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's life was packed with "coaches" who taught him right from wrong and led him on the path to greatness. His parents, coaches Jack Donahue and John Wooden, Muhammad Ali, Bruce Lee, and many others played important roles in Abdul-Jabbar's life and sparked him to become an activist for social change and advancement. The inspiration from those around him, and his drive to find his own path in life, are highlighted in this personal and awe-inspiring journey. Written especially for young readers, Becoming Kareem chronicles how Kareem Abdul-Jabbar become the icon and legend he is today, both on and off the court.
