From foundations in critical thinking skills to practical tools and real-life perspectives, this book empowers young adult readers to be independent media users. During the recent presidential election, “media literacy” became a buzzword that signified the threat media manipulation posed to democratic processes. Meanwhile, statistical research has shown that 8 to 18 year-olds pack more than eleven hours with some form of media into each day by “media multitasking.” Young people are not only eager and interested to learn about and discuss the realities of media ownership, production, and distribution, they also deserve to understand differential power structures in how media influences our culture. The Media and Me provides readers with the tools and perspectives to be empowered and autonomous media users. The book explores critical inquiry skills to help young people form a multidimensional comprehension of what they read and watch, opportunities to see others like them making change, and insight into their own identity projects. By covering topics like storytelling, building arguments and recognizing fallacies, surveillance and digital gatekeeping, advertising and consumerism, and global social problems through a critical media literacy lens, this book will help students evolve from passive consumers of media to engaged critics and creators.

While out for a walk with her mom, a little girl has the surprise of her life --- she meets a real, live, fire-breathing dragon! Now this dragon is nothing to be afraid of --- in fact, he's so friendly that she invites him home for tea. But their afternoon snack is suddenly interrupted when the dragon sneezes and sets the table ablaze. Luckily, the girl knows just what to do, and she teaches her new friend to be fire smart, too. With its funny, rhyming verse and spunky illustrations, Dragons for Tea shows kids that learning about fire safety doesn't have to be scary. The story ends with ?The Dragon's Fire Safety Rhyme? --- a fun and easy way to remember what to do in case of fire.

A series that explores a range of bullying behaviors at the forefront of parental, educational and societal concern, and encourages kids to take a stand against bullying of all kinds. Simultaneous. From School Library Journal: Gr 5-8-Three timely, useful, and informative titles. A one-page scenario unique to a specific type of bullying serves as an example to enlighten readers on the experience of being a target. This scenario further helps to introduce the focus of the book, followed by an explanation and definition of the type of bullying. Each chapter provides helpful advice and recommendations for ways of handling an attack. Other topics examined include the roles and impact of people present during an act of bullying, where an incident occurs, and parents and siblings as bullies. They all help readers to better understand and grasp the trauma experienced by targets. Other chapters address the fear of future attacks and the impact of these incidents on school attendance. A list of personality characteristics of bullies, physical characteristics and tendencies of those often targeted by bullies, and recommendations for actions to take when witnessing an act of bullying or being a victim help readers become empowered. Material is to the point and easy to understand. A short quiz at the conclusion of each book, "Did You Know?" text boxes with additional facts and statistics, "Think About It!" sections, an appealing layout with color photos and computer-enhanced and altered graphics, accompanied by first-person accounts, create accessible and helpful resources.-Susan Shaver, Hemingford Public Schools, NEα(c) Copyright 2013.
