One World, One Day uses exquisite, moving photographs and Barbara Kerley’s poetic text to convey a simple yet profound concept: we are one global family. This is a sophisticated concept book, presented as an elegant picture book with contributions from top international photographers. This beautiful photo book follows the course of one day in our world. Sunrise to sunset is captured in the essential things we all do daily, wherever we live in the world, and in the different ways we do them. The first meal of the day will take on a whole new dimension for American kids as an American pancake breakfast is contrasted with porridge in North Korea and churros in Spain. At the end, each image is reprinted as a thumbnail and accompanied by a detailed caption. Selected images feature photographers’ notes that share the thoughts and methodology involved in the making of the picture and reveal fascinating behind-the-scenes information. The photographers reflect on how the pictures might resonate within the theme of the global family. Such reflections are rooted in the life experiences of these well-traveled professionals. Their global viewpoints, in tandem with Barbara Kerley’s powerful message, set an ideal example for all future world citizens.

Some of the topics covered in this book are bodies of water, the equator, poles, and hemispheres, latitude and longitude, urban and rural areas, landforms, extreme continents, and many more. This book certainly shows a different and fun way to study this important curriculum topic! From School Library Journal: Kindergarten-Grade 4—These titles vary in their usefulness and complexity. Consistency is a problem. In Continents, seven places are named at the beginning under "The 'A' Continents" when only six begin with that letter, and the "Q" entry is "Quartz," which is a bit specific for a book on this topic. Similarly, the first chapter of Animals is "Animals in Danger," but "Rhinoceros" represents "R." In all of the titles, specific names of things, insects, continents, or animals are mixed with generalized categories like "Habitat loss," for "H" in Environment. The books are visually appealing, with color photos on every page, and include a variety of children, animals, and natural environments. They might expose children to new words and curious creatures, but they're strictly additional purchases.—Erlene Bishop Killeen, Stroughton Area School District, WI END "About this title" may belong to another edition of this title.

The ingenuity of African peoples from ancient times to today. Did you know that aloe vera -- now found in countless products, including sunscreens and soaps -- was first used by Africans? They ground it into powder and used it to treat burns and other skin conditions, and hunters used it to disguise their scent from animals. They also used the nutritious oil from the fruit of the oil palm tree in everything from cooking to medicines to wine. And the marimba, better known to us as the xylophone, is believed to have originated 700 years ago in Mali. Other unique African innovations include the technique of banana leaf art and using horns -- and hairdos! -- to communicate important messages. Africans Thought of It features descriptive photos and information-packed text that is divided into sections, including: Agriculture Food Medicine Music Architecture Games & Sports This fourth book in Annick's successful We Thought of It series takes readers on a fascinating journey across the world's second largest continent to discover how aspects of its culture have spread around the globe.

Discover the rich legacy of the peoples of the Arab world. Ink-filled pens, mattresses, and bars of soap -- these are only some of the inventions and innovations that have been passed down through the millennia from the peoples of Arab lands. Readers may be surprised to learn that people from the Arab world have also given us the scalpel, sherbet, planetariums, and three-course meals. The school that became the University of Al-Qarawiyin in Fez, Morocco, was founded in 859 CE. According to many experts, it is the oldest university still operating today. As in the other titles in this series, The Arab World Thought of It uses stunning photos and well-researched information to provide an overview of contributions made in the fields of medicine, architecture, food, and education. Also included is a look at accomplishments in the areas of engineering, transportation, and oil production. Complete with maps, a timeline, an index, and a list of further reading, this book is an excellent starting point for the exploration of a thriving culture.
