This unique picture book was inspired by the stone artwork of Syrian artist Nizar Ali Badr, discovered by chance by Canadian children's writer Margriet Ruurs. The author was immediately impressed by the strong narrative quality of Mr. Badr's work, and, using many of Mr. Badr's already-created pieces, she set out to create a story about the Syrian refugee crisis. Stepping Stones tells the story of Rama and her family, who are forced to flee their once-peaceful village to escape the ravages of the civil war raging ever closer to their home. With only what they can carry on their backs, Rama and her mother, father, grandfather and brother, Sami, set out to walk to freedom in Europe. Nizar Ali Badr's stunning stone images illustrate the story. Orca Book Publishers is pleased to offer this book as a dual-language (English and Arabic) edition.

Celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising with the very first picture book to tell of its historic and inspiring role in the gay civil rights movement. From Rob Sanders, author of the acclaimed Pride: The Story of Harvey Milk and the Rainbow Flag, comes this powerful and timeless true story that will allow young readers to discover the rich and dynamic history of the Stonewall Inn and its role in the LGBTQ+ civil rights movement--a movement that continues to this very day. In the early-morning hours of June 28, 1969, the Stonewall Inn was raided by police in New York City. Though the inn had been raided before, that night would be different. It would be the night when empowered members of the LGBTQ+ community--in and around the Stonewall Inn--began to protest and demand their equal rights as citizens of the United States. Movingly narrated by the Stonewall Inn itself, and featuring stirring and dynamic illustrations, Stonewall: A Building. An Uprising. A Revolution is an essential and empowering civil rights story that every child deserves to hear. PRAISE FOR PRIDE: THE STORY OF HARVEY MILK AND THE RAINBOW FLAG! "Pride is a beacon of (technicolor) light." - Entertainment Weekly "An essential LGBTQ children's book" - Out.com "This children's book about gay Pride should be in every school." - Gay Times Magazine "I couldn't be more thrilled the world now has this book." - Dustin Lance Black, Academy Award-winning screenwriter of MILK

2022 White Ravens Selection Once upon a time there was a Nothing. In this Nothing there was NOTHING. There weren't dragons, witches, elves, astronauts, policemen, sharks, or little mice... So begins Gyula Gábor Tóth's book of whimsical stories that whisks readers away to lands of paradox and play: to a place where anything can happen, one where everything exists all at once, and another where nothing exists at all. "What else do you think wasn't in this Nothing?" Fantastical and full of wit, these short fable-like tales prompt children to reflect on the unfamiliar features of the seemingly familiar world around us. Norbert Nagy, one of the most prominent Hungarian graphic artists, sets dramatic moments from Tóth's text against a surreal, often humorous illustrated landscape, creating a stunning visual world for this award-winning book.

Joseph's grandpa could do almost anything with his hands. He could play the piano, throw a curveball, and tie a triple bowline knot in three seconds flat. But in the 1950s and 60s, he could not bake bread at the Wonder Bread factory. Factory bosses said white people would not want to eat bread touched by the hands of the African Americans who worked there. In this powerful intergenerational story, Joseph learns that people joined their hands together to fight discrimination so that one day, their hands-Joseph's hands-could do anything at all in this whole wide world .

"With courage they rallied and answered the call . . . dreaming of freedom and justice for all." The United States of America was founded on the declaration that all men are created equal. But nearly two hundred years after that proclamation, America was still deeply segregated. Slowly but surely, powerful leaders as well as everyday citizens spoke up for their dreams and beliefs.
